Warren M. Thompson of Clarks Summit died Thursday morning at the VNA Hospice Unit at Community Medical Center. His wife is the former Angela "Annie" Rice. The couple had been married for 29 years.
Born in Scranton, son of the late Maurice and Lydia Davis Thompson, he was a lifelong resident of the Abingtons area and was the co-owner and later sole proprietor of W. Thompson Brothers Inc. He was a member of the Pennsylvania Farmers Association, past president of the Growers Association, a past president of the Horticultural Association and past vice president of the Pennsylvania Vegetable Growers Association, where in 1996 he was made a life member. He was a 32nd degree Mason, being a member of the Waverly Lodge 301 F&AM, and was also a member of Scranton Keystone Consistory and the Irem Temple Shrine. He was a member of the former Shultzville United Methodist Church, which is now the Countryside Community Church. Warren was extremely proud to be a part of his wife's home business for 17 years and named it Annie's Country Kitchen, Thompson's Gourmet Products. He felt at home in the kitchen; he called and delivered orders with pride and enjoyed his friendships with all of the employees of Gerrity's, Shiels and Brunetti's markets. Warren was also a remarkable singer, having sung at more than 200 weddings with his glorious voice.
His family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at Mercy Hospital, Community Medical Center, Allied Rehab and the VNA Hospice at CMC for the wonderful care that Warren received during his illness.
Also surviving are a son, Brian, Falls; a daughter, Denise DePhillips and husband, Vic, Clarks Summit; two grandsons, Justin Michael and Spencer Anthony DePhillips; two stepsons, B.J. Rice and wife, Lise, Mill City; and Tom Rice, Clarks Summit; a stepdaughter, Agnes Sawyer and husband, Judson, North Yarmouth, Maine; seven stepgrandchildren, Natalia, Charlie, Michael, Benjamin and Samuel Rice and Claire and Gwendolyn Sawyer; three sisters, Iva Richards, Bradenton, Fla.; Florence Jaminson, Newton Twp.; and Margaret Glenwright, Tioga; several nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by a son, Glenn; a stepson, Charles Rice; a sister, Hilda Anemast; and a brother, Willard Thompson.
The funeral will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. from the Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home, 418 S. State St., Clarks Summit, with services by the Rev. Dr. J.P. Duncan, pastor of Countryside Community Church, Newton Twp. Interment will be in Newton Cemetery.
