Thomas J. Roberts, 73, of Clarks Summit, died Tuesday morning at Moses Taylor Hospital in Scranton. He was the husband of Betty Wharton Roberts. The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this past year.
Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Robert P. and Letitia M. Roberts. He was a 1959 graduate of Scranton Central High School and went on to attend Keystone College. He was a proud honorably discharged US Navy Veteran who served on the USS Bristol. Prior to his retirement he was employed by Akzo – Nobel, formerly International Salt Co. for over 38 years. Tom also was a driver for the Abington Heights School District, Community Bank and Trust, and most recently Marworth. He was a member of the Clarks Summit United Methodist Church.
Tom was very active in the community. He was a member of the Waverly Masonic Lodge AF&M #301, serving twice as worshipful master, was active as a Shriner in the Irem Temple, Keystone Consistory, Abington Veterans Memorial VFW post 7069, and the Abington Sportsman's Club. He also sang with the Barber Shop singers as well as the church choir. Among his many volunteering passions he would help with the Forever Young Fishing Derby for the children of the community. Tom was also an avid Penn State, NY Yankee, and Dallas Cowboy Fan.
Also surviving is a daughter Lori Mulhern and her husband Kevin, Nicholson; a son Thomas Rhys Roberts and his wife Ryen, Hermitage; a sister Jane E. Roberts, Scranton; three grandchildren Colin, Gavin, and Keira Mulhern; two nephews John Archibald, Gap Pa. and R. Scott Archibald, Thomaston CT.; a niece Lynne Earley, Clarks Green; nine great nieces and nephews, one great great niece, and very special relationship with the Minick family, of Nicholson, especially Mindy.
He was preceded in death by a brother Robert E. Roberts.
The family would like to thank Dr. Hyzinski and his nurses Judy and Sally, Dr. Anthony Perry and his nurse Mary, and the amazingly wonderful care from the staff at Moses Taylor Hospital.
Tom lived a rich life filled with coaching kids, volunteering, and giving back to the community He will be dearly missed by all that knew him.
A celebration of Tom's life, with Masonic service, will be held Saturday October 11th at 11am at the Clarks Summit United Methodist Church, 1210 Morgan Hwy, Clarks Summit, with services by Rev. Amy Raser, Pastor. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 9:30am until time of service at the church.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in Tom's name to the Clarks Summit United Methodist Church, for the new sound system.
