Thomas M. Holmes Jr., Clarks Summit, died Thursday morning at Abington Manor Nursing
Home. His widow is the former June Lewis, the couple celebrated their 60th wedding
anniversary on February 5th.
Born in Scranton, son of the late Thomas M. and Mabel O'Hara Holmes, he has resided in
Clarks Summit for the past 7 years and Clifford the previous 20 years. Prior to
retirement he was a merchandise manager for the Scranton Dry Goods, from 1947-1961 and
for Sugerman's Clothing from 1961-1984. He served in the Army Signal Corp during World
War II.
He was a member of Our Lady of the Snows Church, V.F.W. Shopa-Davey Post, Elkview Country
Club, where he served as a director, and Crystal Lake Private Park Association.
Tom was proud of his service to his country. He was an avid, rugged outdoorsman who
loved fishing, hunting, golf, gardening, and simply enjoying nature. His love,
attention, affection, and sense of humor will be sorely missed by friends and family.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff of Abington Manor for
the wonderful care they provided.
Also surviving are two daughters, Joyce Holmes, and her husband William Ziegler, Clarks
Summit, and Anne Holmes, and her partner, Frouke de Quillettes, Shavertown; two sons,
Atty. Thomas M. Holmes III, Scranton and David J. Holmes, Annapolis, MD; a brother, John
Holmes, Vestal, NY, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard P. Holmes.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday at 9:30 am from Our Lady of the Snows
Church, 301 S. State St., Clarks Summit. Interment will be in Cathedral Cemetery,
Scranton.
Friends may call on Sunday from 2-5pm at the Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home, 418 S. State
St., Clarks Summit.
At the request of the family, in lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. Francis of
Assisi Kitchen, 500 Penn Ave., Scranton PA.
