Steven G. Shields, age 64, died on Monday, August 27, 2018 at his Clarks Summit home.
Born in Plainfield, NJ to Donald and Ruth Day Shields, he was the eldest of three sons. Raised in Scotch Plains, NJ, he was a graduate of North Plainfield High School and the nursing program at Somerset County Community College. Steven was a volunteer on the Plainfield Rescue Squad, and later worked as a registered nurse at Muhlenberg Hospital's emergency department where he met his wife, Marion.
In 1978, he entered the Mercy Hospital School of Anesthesia, becoming a certified registered nurse anesthetist. He worked in that capacity at Mercy for ten years, during which time he earned a BA of Economics and a Master of Health Administration from Wilkes University.
Steven
was the Chief CRNA at Sunbury Hospital for nine years, beginning in 1990, when the family moved to Selinsgrove, PA. In 1999, he began to do locum tenans anesthesia, traveling the country. He also founded, owned, and operated RBCSavers, an autologous transfusion service. In recent years, he worked at Evangelical Community Hospital in Lewisburg, PA.
When not working or spending time with his family and his dog, Skip, Steven enjoyed many hobbies including beekeeping, growing vegetables in his garden, woodworking and welding, competitively driving cars, and building computers.
He is survived by his mother, Ruth Hess, his wife of 40 years, Marion, his son, Gregory Shields and his wife Martina; his stepdaughter, Jennifer Watkins; and his grandchildren, Ryan and Dillon Shields, who were the light of his life. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends at work and in the community.
Steven was predeceased by his brother, Jeffrey.
The family held a private viewing. A visitation will be held on Saturday, September 22nd at 10 AM, followed by a memorial service at 11 AM, at the Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home, 418 S. State Clarks Summit.
