Shirley Holmes, 98, died Wednesday afternoon at Green Ridge Care Center, Scranton.  She was preceded in death by her husband, John W. Holmes, who died in 1987.

Born in Scranton, PA, she was the daughter of the late John and Laura Hemp Sweet.  Shirley was a graduate of Dunmore High School and a veteran of the United States Army, serving with WAC (The Women's Army Corps). She served in the 8 th Army Air Corps in Europe during WWII. Shirley went on to study at Keystone College and Marywood University, where she completed her Masters studies in Education. She retired from the Abington Heights School District, where she taught for 20 years. Shirley enjoyed traveling and reading and had a love for history. She was a member of the Church of Epiphany, Glenburn, and VFW Post 7069.

She is survived by four children: Colin and his wife Camille of Clarks Summit, Doug and his wife Anne of State College, Constance Elberth of Neversink, New York, and Christopher and his wife Janet of Rhode Island; ten grandchildren Katheryn, Rebeccah, Laura and her husband Andrew Pakstas-Smith, William and his wife Stephanie, Daniel, Ben and his wife Lauren, Emily, Trevor of Clarks Summit, Leah of Bethlehem, and Leslie and her husband Chris Allen of Raleigh NC; seven great grandchildren Giavanna, Charlotte, Violet, Lucas, Liam, Jack, and Alice.

Services will be held at a later date.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc., 418 S. State Street, Clarks Summit.
