Sandra L. Lewis, 67, a lifelong resident of Scott Twp., died Thursday at Hospice Community Care, Dunmore, following a long battle with renal disease. She was the wife of Albert Lewis, who died in June 1981.
Born in Peckville, daughter of the late Stephen and Margaret Miller, she was a member of Mount Bethel Baptist Church, Scott Twp. A 1960 graduate of Scott High School, she retired from Specialty Records after 20 years of service. In the mid-1970s, she became one of the first female school-bus drivers in Lackawanna County, having driven the bus for Rufus Nichols, the late Charles Boyarsky and, finally, the late Frank Yablonski.
Sandy enjoyed feeding the many wild birds that surrounded her home and hollering at the kids in the neighborhood, which garnered her the nickname "Grinch" for her sarcastic wit.
She also enjoyed her friend, Tammy, who looked in on her every day at the Laurels in Mid Valley.
Family members wish to extend their sincere gratitude to Dr. Kenneth Rudolph for his commitment and the care he provided to their mother over the years, and to Dr. Jeremiah Eagan. A special thanks goes to Mrs. Georgann Vance and the staff at the Laurels in Mid Valley, where Sandy had lived for the last year. Also, a thank you goes to the staff at Hospice Community Care, Dunmore, for its commitment, support and compassion in her last weeks of life.
Surviving are a daughter, Susan, Dickson City; a son, Stephen, Scott Twp.; two sisters, Ruth Jones, Nicholson; and Margaret "Peggy" Oakey and husband, Thomas, West Chester, Ohio; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
As per her final wishes, no services will be scheduled. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.
