Samuel "Sam" Buranich, 88, of Newton Twp., died Thursday morning at VNA Hospice Unit at Community Medical Center in Scranton. He was surrounded by his loving family. His wife is the former Marie Ann Potkulski. The couple had been married for over 62 years.
Born in Milwaukee, he was the son of the late Peter and Anna Sompel Buranich. Sam attended the Milwaukee school decided to leave after the 8th grade to become an entrepreneur before his time. He had several businesses during his lifetime. He was a self-employed excavating and school bus contractor. He was also a school bus driver instructor for over 40 years, owner of Buranich Lawn & Leisure John Deere dealerships and service shop. He also began one of the first landfills in Newton Township, which was one of the first in the area.
Sam enjoyed farming, riding his tractors, and taking his grandsons to the auctions. Mostly he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and teaching his grandsons about business and farming and machinery.
Also surviving are six daughters Marie Buranich, Newton Twp.; Shirley Barry and her husband Robert, Newton Twp.; Diane Buranich, Newton Twp.; Nancy Frear and her husband Theodore, Lake Winola; Beverly Birch and her husband Sidney, Clarks Summit; and Judith Anderson and her husband Jeremy, Newton Twp.; ten grandchildren Kathleen , Erin, and Peter Barry, Theodore II and Samantha Frear, Sandon, Quentin, and Harrison Birch, Jacob and Lincoln Anderson, several nieces and nephews, and his beloved dog Freckles.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Harold and John Buranich Sr., and sisters Catherine Maximuk, Theresa Kisha, Anna Kopec, Irene Esposito, Mary Cislak, Sophie Tuttle, Olga Mazaleski, Justine Jadik, baby brother Michael .
A funeral service will be held Sunday at 5pm from the Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home, 418 S. State St. Clarks Summit Pa. 18411, with services by Rev Brent Stouffer, pastor of the Clarks Green United Methodist Church. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 2pm until time of service at the funeral home.
