Ruth B. Smith
Ruth B. Smith, formerly of Chinchilla, died Tuesday morning in the Golden Living Center. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Allen G. Bortree, in 1951, and Francis Smith, in October 1990.

Born in Scranton, daughter of the late William and Laura Swartz Francis, she was a resident of Chinchilla for 35 years and lived in Factoryville from 1980 to 1997.

Before retirement, she was a self-employed hairdresser in the Green Ridge section and was also the secretary and bookkeeper for many years at Francis Smith and Sons in Chinchilla. She was a member of the Chinchilla United Methodist Church and was a former member of the Green Ridge Presbyterian Church. She was a graduate of Scranton Central High School and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary as well as a Cub, Boy and Girl Scout leader.

She traveled extensively with her husband, "Smitty." She enjoyed knitting Christmas stockings for her family and friends across the country.

Surviving are two sons, Craig, Nicholson; and William, Waverly; three daughters, Connie Leavesley, Clarks Summit; Carole Granville, Sunderland, Md.; and Carol Ann Saar, Clarks Summit; a brother, Russell, Colorado; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Claudia Rebuth; and three brothers, William, Crawford and Robert.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 9 a.m. from the Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home, 418 S. State St., Clarks Summit, to be officiated by the Rev. Norman T. Faux, pastor of the Chinchilla United Methodist Church.

Friends may call Friday, 5 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church of Chinchilla, 411 Layton Road, Clarks Summit, 18411; or to the donor's charity of choice.
