Robert Sukel, 73, of Waverly Township, died Monday at Regional Hospital, Scranton.  He is survived by Linda J. Unsworth Sukel, his wife of thirty years.

Born in Pittsfield, MA to the late Nathan and Theresa Papas Sukel, he was a graduate of McCann Technical High School and then attended Vermont Technical College.

He was a patriot. He was a decorated veteran of the U.S. Navy in service of his country, serving three tours in Vietnam on the USS New Orleans LPH -11 from May 1968 through 1971. He also served as a pilot on the preliminary and perimeter recovery of the Apollo 14 moon mission.

He was a skilled electrician and worked at James Hunter Machine and Morrison Berkshire in North Adams, MA. In 1991, he moved to Pennsylvania where he worked for several local electrical contractors. He was a member of the IBEW local 81. In 2004, he began working at Tobyhanna Army Depot and retired in 2012.

He was a very generous and giving person, with a unique sense of humor.

In addition to his wife, Robert is survived by his son, Jacob Nathan, Waverly Township; brother Arthur and his wife Carole, Wayne, NJ; sisters Marilyn Coyle and her husband Edward, Plano, TX, Judith Davis and her husband William, Green Valley, AZ, and Patricia Preate and her husband Carlon, South Abington Township, PA; several nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

Services will be private at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Robert Sukel Memorial Fund at St. Jude's Children Research Hospital.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home, 418 S. State St., Clarks Summit, PA and online condolences may be left for the family at www.lawrenceeyounfuneralhome.com .
