Rita Atkins of Tunkhannock died Friday in the Abington Manor Nursing Home.
Before retirement, she was a professor at Keystone College and Shimer College, Mount Carmel, Ill., specializing in botany and zoology. She enjoyed traveling, especially to Portugal, and she spoke Portuguese fluently. She enjoyed visiting national parks, old mills, old houses and lighthouses.
Surviving are her dear friends, Josephine "DeDe" Hedrick and Betsy Ziegler, both of Factoryville.
A blessing service will be Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home, 418 S. State St., Clarks Summit, by the Rev. John O'Bell, assistant pastor of Our Lady of the Snows Church, Clarks Summit.
