Richard Rodgers, 66, of Clarks Summit died Wednesday morning in the VNA Hospice Unit at Geisinger Community Medical Center in Scranton. He was the husband of the former Carol Knopp. The couple has been married for 45 years.
Born in Scranton, son of the late Walter and Blanche Knott Rodgers, he was a 1966 graduate of West Scranton High School, and was a proud Navy veteran. Before his retirement, he was employed as a truck driver for Waste Management, but he had worked for DeFazio Trucking for many years. Rick was a member of the Waverly Masonic Lodge F&AM No. 301, Keystone Consistory, Irem Temple Shriners and the Countryside Community Church, Newton. He was also a member of the Gold Wing Riders Association.
Rick was an avid fan of drag racing, and was always ready to attend a race with his friend, Mark Dennebaum. He enjoyed being active in many organizations, volunteering his time, and would lend a helping hand to anyone. He especially loved assisting with Boy Scout Pack 152. His greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren and attending all their events.
Also surviving are two daughters, Sheri Brown and her husband, James Jr., Ransom Twp.; and Jennifer Sutton and her husband, David, South Abington Twp.; five grandchildren, Abby, Andrew and Amelia Sutton; and Madelyn and James Brown III; a brother, Jeffrey Rodgers and his wife, Donna, Exeter, and their children, Kaylee and Jamie; a mother-in-law, Betty Knopp; and an aunt, Irene Valliant, Florida.
A funeral service, with Masonic and full military honors, will be on Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home, 418 S. State St., Clarks Summit, with services by the Rev. Mark Terwilliger, pastor, Countryside Community Church. Interment will be at the convenience of the family in Abington Hills Cemetery.
Friends may call on Sunday from noon until the time of the service at the funeral home.
