Philip J. Dettore Jr., 86, of Clarks Summit, died unexpectedly at his home Friday morning. He was the husband of Lois Woodyatt Dettore. The couple had been married for 55 years.
Born in Clarks Summit, he was the son of the late Philip J. Dettore Sr. and Janette Gabriel Dettore. He was a 1948 graduate of Clarks Summit High School, where he excelled in football and held the area scoring record for 33 years. He continued his football career at Manilius Military School and also the University of Pennsylvania. Philip then volunteered for the Marine Corps during the Korean War. He was employed as a construction manager for Wayne Crushed Stone and Hansen Industries.
Philip was inducted into the Scranton Area Sports Hall of Fame and the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame, Northeastern Chapter. He was also past president of the Abington Lions Club and past commodore of the Scranton Canoe Club. Phil enjoyed life to the fullest, especially the time spent with his family and friends.
Also surviving are two sons, Thomas and wife, Julie, Dallas; and Philip III and wife, Karen, Leland, N.C.; a brother, Santo Dettore and wife, Ruth, Clarks Summit; a sister, Joanne Bower, Greenwood Lake, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Sophia, Drake, Ava and Leah Dettore; two nephews, Santo Dettore Jr. and Jeffrey Bower; five nieces, Marianne Jellock, Christine Dettore, Gloria Serpe, Janette Bower and Carol Matlock.
He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Rocco and Jim Dettore; and a sister, Mary Chier.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 1 p.m. from Our Lady of the Snows Church, 301 S. State St., Clarks Summit. Interment will follow at Fairlawn Cemetery in Dalton.
In lieu of a viewing, the family would like to extend an invitation for a celebration of Philip's life, which will be held Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Commons at Nichols Village, 1101 Northern Blvd., Clarks Summit.
