Philip L. Whitbeck, 70, of Waverly, died Thursday evening at the Hospice of the Sacred Heart in Dunmore after a courageous 6 year battle with Multiple Myeloma. His wife is the former Margaret T. Yerabek. The couple married on January 10, 1970.
Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Norman F. and Ruth Evans Whitbeck, Sr. He was a 1963 graduate of Clarks Summit Abington High School. He was an owner and former President of Whitbeck Insurance Agency, Inc in Clarks Summit and currently served as Vice President.
Phil was very community minded and active having served as President of the West Volusia Memorial Hospital Federal Credit Union in Deland, FL; President of the Waverly Community House Board of Directors; Commodore of the Lake Henry Yacht Club in Waverly; and Commodore of the Scranton Canoe Club in Lake Winola. He served on the Board of Directors of the Humane Society of Lackawanna County as well as the Boys and Girls Club of Scranton.
He was an avid baseball fan and will be remembered by many as a coach of the Abington Senior Little League, Abington Heights Junior Varsity Baseball, and the Abington American Legion League.
Phil had a lifelong love of music and performed as a vocalist with many bands, groups and musicians over the last 50 years.
The Scranton Canoe Club held a special place in his heart, as he made many fond memories and lifelong friends there from the time he was a young child.
Also surviving are a son, Michael D. Whitbeck and his wife Anne, Waverly; and a daughter Abigail E. Fenton and her husband Ryan, Clarks Summit; four grandchildren, Liam and Evan Fenton and Tristan and Zane Whitbeck, he adored and was adored by his grandsons; a brother Norman Whitbeck, Clarks Summit; a nephew Andrew Whitbeck, CT.
The family will receive friends on Sunday from 3 to 6 pm at the Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home, 418 S. State St., Clarks Summit.
A Celebration of Philip's Life will be held on Monday at 11AM at the Scranton Canoe Club in Lake Winola.
Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family.
