Peter Dohanich, 97, formerly of Fleetville, died Monday evening in New Orleans. He was the husband of the late Amelia C. Gallo Dohanich, R.N., who died in 2010. The couple had been married for 62 years at the time of her death.
Born in Jessup, Peter was the son of the late Michael and Mary Baron Dohanich, both Russian immigrants. A graduate of Jessup High School, he was a proud Army veteran of WW II, who served in the 77th Division with the 302nd Combat Engineers throughout the Pacific theater, and was awarded the Bronze Star for bravery. He was the owner of a service station and auto repair business, Pete's Garage in Fleetville, for 25 years. He was a member of Corpus Christi church in Montdale.
Surviving are a son, Gary Peter Dohanich, Ph.D., and partner, Stacy Overstreet, Ph.D., who are members of the Tulane University faculty in New Orleans, LA; a sister Catherine Lavender and her husband Dave, Venice, FL; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his beloved wife Amelia, he was preceded in death by four brothers; Andrew, John, Michael and Stephen; and two sisters; Anne Christman and Mary Yurgosky.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday at 10 am at the Corpus Christi Church – St. John Vianney Parish, 704 Montdale Rd., Scott Twp., to be celebrated by Fr. Michael Kirwin. The family will receive visitors from 9 am until the time of the Mass at the church.
Entombment will be in Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Finch Hill.
