Margaret "Peg" W. Cole, 89, a resident of Chinchilla for the past 63 years, died Wednesday in the Carbondale Nursing Home. Her husband of 68 years, the late William "Bill" C. Cole Sr., died Feb. 13, 2000.
Born and raised in North Scranton, daughter of the late Camber and Annie Williams, she was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School and was a longtime member of the Chinchilla United Methodist Church. Before retiring, she served as the wage and occupational privilege tax collector for South Abington Twp. and Abington Heights School District for 29 years. She was employed by Isherwood Jewelers for 49 years and previously employed by I.C.S. and Baltimore Life Insurance Co.
She was a lifetime member of the Lackawanna County Republican Committee and had been an active member of the Republican Party for more than 68 years, having served as committeewoman for the majority of those years. She was greatly honored to be chosen to be the senior citizen representative of Lackawanna County to attend a reception for President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney at Community Medical Center in 2000.
She and her late husband enjoyed many years of traveling most of the 50 states and Canada. She enjoyed spending her spare time sewing yo-yo quilts, talking Republican politics and collecting her favorite mascot, the elephant. Her greatest pleasures were her daughter, son, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, with whom she was a loving and generous mom, grandma and great-grandma. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Surviving are a daughter, Peggy C. Armstrong and husband, Alan, Greenfield Twp.; a son, William C. Cole Jr. and wife, Mary Ellen, Chinchilla; three grandchildren, Heather Jordan and husband, Eric, Dunmore; Maggie Heimbuch and husband, Douglas, Danville; and Ashlee Armstrong, Greenfield Twp.; two great-grandchildren, Maggie Anne Heimbuch and Brynne Rylee Jordan; a brother, Willard Williams Sr. and wife, Peggy, Scranton; and many nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas "Bucky" Williams, Scranton; and William "Bill" Williams, Scranton; and a sister, Janet Bailey, Chinchilla.
The funeral will be Monday at 11 a.m. at the Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home, 418 S. State St., Clarks Summit, with services by the Rev. Norman T. Faux. Interment, Abington Hills Cemetery.
Friends may call Sunday, 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., and Monday, 10 until time of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Community Care, Dunmore; or Chinchilla United Methodist Church.
