Dr. Paul J. Coolican, of Clarks Summit, passed away Friday at Geisinger CMC, surrounded by his loving family. He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, the former Joan Ann Orr.
Born at home in Scranton on July 31, 1930, he was the son of the late Fred and Sara Flaherty Coolican.
After graduating from Scranton Preparatory High School, he attended the University of Scranton and received a doctorate degree from Temple University of Dentistry and served a residency at Philadelphia General Hospital. As a member of the Scranton Dental Society, he served as Chairman of Continuing Education as well as Treasurer. He was a volunteer for the Jewish Federation and Allied Services. He also acted as coordinator between the Scranton Dental Society and Lackawanna United Fund.
Dr. Coolican was a highly respected dental practitioner in West Side Scranton for more than 50 years and maintained a practice with his son Dr. John Coolican before retirement.
Dr. Coolican had many interests including billiards, healthy eating, ballroom dancing, reading history, political banter, and solving algebraic problems before his morning coffee. However, his passion was always his family. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was known for his kind and gentle demeanor, setting a true example of integrity.
He is survived by daughters, Carol Hosier and husband Jeff, Clarks Summit; Christine Lucarelli and husband Bruce, West Chester; Patricia, Clarks Summit; and son Dr. John Coolican, Scranton; and 10 grandchildren: Kyle, Kaylin, Keegan and Kullen Hosier, Clarks Summit; Julie, Laura and Scott Lucarelli, West Chester; Megan, Kelly and Katie Coolican, Moosic.
The family would like to express heartfelt thanks to Golden Care of NEPA for home health services.
A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 1:00pm in Saint Gregory's Church, 330 N. Abington Road Clarks Green. Calling hours 12-1pm at church before service.
Internment will be at Cathedral Cemetery.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 418 S. State St., Clarks Summit.
