Nancy M. Young, 71, of South Abington Twp., died Tuesday evening after a lengthy illness, at home surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of the late Frank J. Young, who died in 1984.
Born in Holyoke, Mass., she was the daughter of the late George and Yvonne LaFond Hemingway. She was a graduate of Precious Blood High School in Holyoke. She had worked in the service/quality department at GE, and later for the Rainbow Market in Chinchilla. Prior to her illness, she was employed by Gerrity's Supermarket in Clarks Summit.
She was a member of St. Gregory's Parish in Clarks Green, and was a past president of the Chinchilla Hose Company Ladies Auxiliary. She was a social member of the VFW Post No. 7069 in Clarks Summit and a former member of the Republican Committee of Lackawanna County. Nancy loved going to yard and garage sales looking for bargains. She also enjoyed going out to eat after shopping and going to the casino with her sister, Judy, and Judy Boettcher, her best friend. She was also an avid player of the Pa. Lottery. She liked working in her yard planting flowers and enjoyed playing Scrabble.
Surviving are a son, Danny Young, Clarks Summit; a stepdaughter, Roxanne Sonn-Suzie, Pingree Grove, Ill.; a sister, Judy Hemingway, Clarks Summit; two grandsons, Michael Cavett, Gainesville, Fla.; and Brian Sonn, Gilbert, Ill.; a nephew, Shawn and his wife, Jocyln Hemingway, Ludlow, Mass.; and a niece, Tonya and husband, Doug Hamel, Granby, Mass.
She was preceded in death by her longtime companion, Vince White; a stepdaughter, Carol D. Cavett; two brothers, Ernie and Norbert Hemingway; and a granddaughter, Kimberly Roberts.
Services will be private at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to American Cancer Society, 712 S. Keyser Ave., Taylor, PA 18517; or the VNA Hospice of Lackawanna County, 301 Delaware Ave., Olyphant, PA 18447.
Arrangements are entrusted to the care of the Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home & Cremation Svcs., 418 S. State St., Clarks Summit, PA.
