Michael G. Hanis, 69, of Ransom, died Wednesday afternoon at Regional Hospital of Scranton, surrounded by his loving family and friends. He was the husband of the former Georgina Degilio. The couple has been married for 41 wonderful years.
Born in Dunmore, he was the son of the late Michael and Sally Hanis. He was a graduate of Dunmore High School and went on to serve his country in the Army Reserves. After high school he was employed by Stauffer Chevrolet in Scranton, and after that worked for Tunis Construction for almost 30years. Mike then became co-owner of Degilio Services with his brother in law, Nick. He also drove bus #21 in the Abington Heights School District for 29 years. He was a member of the Countryside Community Church in Newton.
Mike had a great passion for street rods and restored a 1948 Chevy which won several awards at area car shows; and had plans to restore a 1937 Buick. He greatly enjoyed his extensive collection of Lionel trains. Mike and Georgina took frequent road trips and loved to travel, visiting many great places in the United States. He was a member of the Ransom Lions Club, Harding Rod and Gun Club, and the Boulevard Cruisers Car Club.
Mike often expressed how he loved living in the country; he enjoyed the quietness, the greenery, the animals and most of all the friendly people. He took great pride in his home and would spend hours working in the yard on his many landscaping projects. He was a kind, gentle, caring man whose heart was always open to caring for a stray cat or two. When Mike moved to Ransom, he gained not only a large family of aunts, uncles and cousins, but made many long lasting friends. Especially dear to him was his nephew Bob Degilio and wife Meghan, and their two girls, Maddie and Taylor, and his niece Lisa O'Brien. Also surviving is a brother in law Nicholas Degilio and his wife Joan, and sister in law Mary Ann Milo.
The family would like to thank their friends and family members for the ongoing support shown by their many visits, prayers and cards.
