Mary M. Murphy of Waverly died Saturday afternoon at Moses Taylor Hospital. She was the widow of Harold Murphy, who died in 1980.
Born in Dunmore, daughter of the late Christopher and Minnie Miller Gougoulis, she resided in the Waverly area most of her life. Before retirement, she was a weigh master for Consumer Coal. Later, she became a home economist for Westinghouse.
She attended St. Mary of the Lake Catholic Church and was associated with the Lackawanna branch of the Pennsylvania Association for the Blind, where she served as a board member. A founding member of the Abington Players, she was also a member of Merry Minstrels. She was a truly loving a compassionate woman who adored her family and all of her friends.
Surviving are three daughters, Marilyn Harvilchuck, Southport, N.C.; Harriet "Susie" Migliori, Tunkhannock; and Georgiana Quinton, Indianapolis; a son, Paul, Waverly; a sister, Anastasia "Nonnie" Lafean, Pittsburgh; seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by three sisters, Bernice Wray, Pauline Gumaer and Helen Volz; and two brothers, James and George Gougoulis.
A blessing service will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home, 418 State St., Clarks Summit. Friends may call 9 until service time. Interment, Hickory Grove Cemetery, Waverly.
