Mary R. Markowski, 97, of Clarks Summit and formerly of Throop, died Tuesday at the Lackawanna County Health Care Center. She was the widow of Edward Markowski, who died in 1952.
Born in Throop, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Kutis. Before retiring, she was a cigar marker for the American Tobacco Co., where she served as the president of Cigar Union Local 295. She was a devout Catholic and a member of Our Lady of the Snows Church, Clarks Summit, and its Women's Guild. She was a resident of Clarks Summit for more than 25 years and was very active at the Bedford Apartments as well as the oldest resident.
She enjoyed many crafts, quilting, bingo, traveling to Disney World and going on cruises with her family.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Stephen Jaditz, VNA Hospice, Geneva Home Health Care Services and the Lackawanna County Health Care staff who took exceptional care of Mary.
Surviving are a son, Edward Markowski, Seaford, Del.; a son-in-law, Robert Uscowskas, Taylor, who was her caregiver for 13 years; five grandchildren, Greg, Robert Jr., Diane, Linda and Maria; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Dolores Uscowskas; and three sisters, Margaret Kutis, Kathryn Kutis and Josephine Zinsky.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of the Snows Church, 301 S. State St., Clarks Summit. Interment will be in Cathedral Cemetery.
