Marvin Dove Miller died on April 24 in Clarks Summit after a full life of professional achievement and community service. He leaves behind: his dear wife of 61 yrs, Gerry (child of Katherine Taylor and Gerald V. Redington); son Marvin (Anne) in AR; daughter Jheri (Bill Newell) in Co; daughter Lucy (Peter Whan) in FL; son Kevin in CO; and brother Leonard (Carol) in AZ.
Born in Scott Twp to Marvin Lewis and Maude Dove on April 23, 1934 as the 6 th generation of Millers to work that land since 1793 (a legacy which continues with the Miller Orchard, Graves and Maruska Farms). Teenaged Marvin helped save the White family barn from burning several times (now Carriage Barn Antiques), thus began a lifetime of volunteer fire service.
After graduating from Penn State Forestry School in 1955, Tau Phi Delta, he and Gerry Redington married and left PA for career in wood utilization at Koppers, Inc. Throughout the US, he led environmental clean up and innovative building design, retiring in 1995.
During this time, he also served in the Civil Air Patrol, founded the Colorado Trapper's Assn and was inducted into the Natl Trapper's Hall of Fame in 2010, spent 21 years on the Lookout Fire Dept, 12 on its board. In all his endeavors, teaching younger generations was a central principle. He delighted in winning many ribbons for marksmanship and the Liar's Contest at annual Rendezvous'. His storytelling and recitation of Robert Service poems became a treasured tradition for his children and grandchildren (Jean-Paul and Forrest Beaupre; Rebecca, Max and Mitch Miller). One of his favorite Service stanzas':
There's a race of men that don't fit in,
a race that can't stay still,
They range the field and they rove the flood
and they climb the mountain's crest,
Theirs is the curse of the gypsy's blood,
and they don't know how to rest.
Our beloved husband and father has found his rest in the Miller Cemetery on Fairview Road. Viewing at 10am, Memorial Service 12pm, Burial 2:30pm on Saturday, April 29 at the Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home, 418 S. State St., Clark Summit.
