Madelyn (Madge) Mayer Purcell of Clarks Summit passed away peacefully Friday at the Allied Skilled Nursing Facility surrounded by her children.
Born in Scranton, Madelyn was the daughter of the late Robert and Mary McLaughin Mayer. Prior to retirement, she was the executive assistant to the CFO of the Community Medical Center for more than 29 years. Prior to her time at CMC, she was the clerical secretary for South Abington Township. She was a member of Our Lady of the Snows Church.
Madge was an avid gardener known to have a "Madgical" green thumb. Her favorite time of year was spring and summer when she would plant and watch her gardens grow and share their beauty with family and friends. When not in the garden Madge was a prolific reader and especially enjoyed the science genres. Her favorite was astronomy. She could read the constellations and even has two stars named after her in the official star registry as gifts from her children. Madge had a love for words and was a force in the game of Scrabble. She wrote poetry as well.
Surviving are six daughters, Patti Purcell, Scranton; Terri Nappi and her husband, Dominic Jr., Downingtown; Nanci Purcell, Clarks Summit; Susan DiPilla and her husband, Angelo, Woodbury, N.J.; Mary Beth Albertini and her husband, Brian of Rockville, Md.; Margaret Purcell-McPherson and her husband, Davy, Morristown, N.J.; a son, Robin Purcell and his wife, Terry, Newton Twp.; three sisters, Pauline Fallon, Scranton; Eileen Bowen, Scranton; and Eleanor Anderson, Bethlehem, Pa.; two brothers, Robert and Donald Mayer, both of Scranton; her former husband, Robert Purcell; 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild, who all referred to her as "Granmadge."

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the caregivers of the Compassionate Care Hospice and the Allied Skilled Nursing Facility 2nd floor staff for the wonderful care given to Madge.
