Lawrence E. "Bud" Young Jr., Clarks Summit, died Monday at home surrounded by his family and friends. His wife is the former Linda Weeks. His first wife, the former Katherine Davis, died in 1992.
Born in Reading, son of the late Lawrence E. Sr. and Lois Burkholder Young, he was a graduate of Abington Heights High School, where he excelled in track and football. He attended Elizabethtown College and graduated from the Simmons School of Mortuary Science, Syracuse, N.Y. In 1972, he received his funeral director's license from the commonwealth of Pennsylvania. He worked at the family funeral business in Clarks Summit and with his cousin, J. Robert Bomberger, in North Scranton. In 1986, he purchased the business from his father and operated it until his death. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Clarks Summit, where he served in the past as an elder and a deacon. He was a member of the Abington Lions Club, where he served as a board member and past president. He was a member of Waverly Lodge 301, Free and Accepted Masons, and was a member and past president of the Abington Keystone Consistory. He was a member of the Irem Temple Shrine and a board member of the Glenwood Mausoleum.
Bud was past president of the Abington Community Library Board and worked with students of Baptist Bible College, instructing them on funeral services. He was the youngest member of the Golden Circle Dinner Club and a recipient of a Paul Harris Fellow Award from the Rotary Club of the Abingtons. He was a member of the Lackawanna County Funeral Directors Association, the Pennsylvania Funeral Directors Association and the National Funeral Directors Association.
Bud was an exceptional cook. He told a good joke and appreciated hearing a good one even more. He enjoyed fishing and, in particular, enjoyed his fishing trips to Canada with his friends. He also had a special love for his four legged friends, Barney, "Ugly" and "Dog." Until his illness, Bud never realized what an impact his life had on people in the community and how much people appreciated his service to them in their time of need. He and his family were completely overwhelmed by the love and support they received.
Also surviving are a son, Stephen and wife, Tina, Clarks Summit; a daughter, Stacie and husband, Chris Manci, Clarks Summit; two stepdaughters, Dawn and husband, Tom Berkley, Norfolk, Va.; and Tammi Bradican and fiancee, Mike Henry, Clarks Summit; seven grandchildren, Tanner and Grace Young, Parker Manci, Gavin and Alec Bradican, James and Ned Berkley; a sister, Elizabeth and husband, Jack Gerrity, Aiken, S.C.; an uncle, Bruce Burkholder, Lititz; nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. in the First Presbyterian Church of Clarks Summit, School Street, with services by the Rev. William Carter, pastor. As per Bud's wishes, interment will be private.
Those attending the service are asked to go directly to the church.
