Kathryn D. Rudis, RN BS

Kathryn Duenger Rudis of Clarks Summit passed away on June 9, 2018.

Kathryn was born on March 25, 1934 in Berwick, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of the late Joseph Row Duenger and Kathryn Mae Ringrose Boston Duenger. Her husband Edward J. Rudis passed away in 1991 after 31 years of marriage.

Kay graduated from Kingston High School Class of 1952 where she excelled in basketball. She went on to graduate from Wilkes-Barre General Hospital School of Nursing in 1955 and University of Pennsylvania in 1960. While in Philadelphia, she worked in the Public Health System in North Philadelphia and spent summers on a tobacco farm in Connecticut to pay for her education.

After graduation she returned to Northeastern Pennsylvania and moved to Lake Winola where she resided until she moved to Clarks Summit in 2006. She worked her entire career in Nursing; as a Nursing Educator at Wilkes-Barre General School of Nursing, School Nurse, Private Duty Nurse and ending her career retiring from Clarks Summit State Hospital as a Psychiatric Nursing Instructor.

When not playing Scrabble, she enjoyed many hobbies and was an accomplished pianist. She was active in choral groups in the community and the church choirs at the First Presbyterian Church of Clarks Summit.

She was an ordained elder in the Presbyterian Church and served on the session at the First Presbyterian Church of Clarks Summit and the Board of Deacons. In the community, she served on the boards of the Lake Winola Cemetery Association, the Partnership for Clarks Summit State Hospital and the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital Alumni Association. She volunteered her time generously to many community organizations including the Griffin Pond Animal Shelter.

Kathryn is survived by her two sons: Mark and his wife Marie, Providence, Rhode Island, and David and his wife Ellen, Moosic, Pennsylvania. Grandchildren: Ian Rudis Tiverton, Rhode Island; Shane Carvalho, Bristol, RI and Sarah Carvalho, Providence, RI.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Margaret Morgan, Thousand Oaks, California, and Joan Richardson, Levittown, Pennsylvania.

The family would like to especially thank her caregivers, Samuella "Sammy" McVicar and Diane "Dee" Haskett and the kind and compassionate staff of Oakwood Terrace and Riverside Nursing and Rehabilitation Center where she resided the last 7 weeks of her life. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Music Ministry at Clarks Summit Presbyterian Church, 300 School Street, Clarks Summit, PA 18411 or the Griffin Pond Animal Shelter, 967 Griffin Pond Road, South Abington Township, PA 18411.

A memorial Service will be held Saturday June 16, 2018 at 10 AM at First Presbyterian Church of Clarks Summit, 300 School Street, Clarks Summit, PA. Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery, Overfield Township, Lake Winola. Friends may call from 5-7 PM on Friday, June 15 at the Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home, 418 S. State Street, Clarks Summit, PA.
