June Holmes, formerly of Scranton, died peacefully Monday at Mercy Center in Dallas, PA after an illness. She was the beloved wife of the late Thomas Holmes Jr. and celebrated 60 years of marriage prior to his death in 2008.
Born in Scranton, she was the Daughter of James and Henrietta Naumann Lewis. She attended Scranton Schools and was the Valedictorian of her High School class at Scranton Tech. Prior to her marriage she worked as a paralegal in Scranton.
She was the friend who sat down and wrote you a heartfelt note that soothed your soul. She was the neighbor who appeared at the door with soup and a listening ear when you wondered if anyone really cared. She was the mother who loved her career as mom and homemaker. She was a life lesson in motion, the most important lessons she taught were treating people with respect, dignity and compassion and kindness. She was the mother who nurtured the individuality of each of her four children, encouraging them to follow their passions. She delighted in her family and friends, in music and in laughter.
June will be missed and remembered as a loving mother and wife, devoted daughter, sister and aunt. Her gentleness and generosity touched everyone that knew her. Her children are ever grateful for all of the time she brought joy and inspiration to their lives.
She is survived by daughter Joyce Holmes and her husband William Ziegler, Clarks Summit, son David Holmes, Annapolis MD, and daughter Anne Holmes and her wife Frouke de Quillettes, Shavertown. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
She was preceded in death by a son, Atty. Thomas Holmes III Esq., three brothers, James "Bud" Lewis, Willard Lewis and Jay Lewis .
The family would like to express their thanks to the staff of Mercy Center in Dallas, PA and Sacred Heart Hospice for the loving care they provided for "June Bug".
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday at 9:30 in Our Lady of the Snows Church, 300 S. State St., Clarks Summit. Interment will follow in Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton.
Friends may call on Thursday from 4 to 7 pm at the Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home, 418 S. State St., Clarks Summit, PA.
