Joy Louise Matteson, 92, of Chinchilla PA, went to be with the Lord Saturday November 14th at her daughter's home in Annapolis MD. She was the beloved wife of Bernhardt Farischon Matteson who went to the Lord in 1979.
Born in Ridgely TN, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Clyde Boswell and Lizzie Belle Argo Boswell. After graduation as Valedictorian from Ridgely High School she worked at the Dept. of Public Health in Nashville TN, then the American Red Cross at Dyersburg Army Base, where she met Sgt. Bernhardt (Matt) Matteson. They married at the end of WWII and moved to his hometown of Chinchilla, where she worked for the Welfare Council of Lackawanna County. After several years at home raising two daughters, Joy spent 15 years with the U.S. Post Office serving as Postmaster in Chinchilla for the two years prior to her retirement.
Joy had been an active member of Chinchilla United Methodist Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher and was on various committees. She was a selfless, compassionate person who always put the needs of others before her own. Joy's greatest loves were the Lord, her husband, and her family.
Surviving are two daughters: Susan and husband Chris Wells, Jacksonville FL; and Christine Matteson and husband LTC (Ret) Glenn McCarty, Annapolis MD; four grandchildren: Scott Matteson Fuller and wife Kristy, GA; Christopher Fuller and wife Becky, CT; Matteson McCarty and wife Caitlin, OK; Jameson McCarty and wife Melissa, MD; four great grandchildren: Jack Fuller; Aidan Fuller; John and Clara Joy McCarty; nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by five sisters: Frances and husband Nat Taylor; Faye and husband Robin Pierce; Ernestine and husband Joe Miller; Alice Boswell; and one brother, Thomas Boswell.
The family will receive friends Saturday, November 21st from 12 – 1:30 p.m. at the Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home, 418 S. State St. Clarks Summit, PA 18411, with a Celebration of Life service to begin at 1:30 p.m. Interment at Abington Hills Cemetery, S. Abington Twp., immediately afterward.
