Joseph E. Byrne, 85, of Clarks Summit, died Friday afternoon at home.

Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late John and Mary Kelly Byrne. Upon graduating from college, he worked in publishing for Addison Wesley in Boston as an acquisition editor and also worked for Benziger Brothers secondary textbook publishers. Before retirement, he was the proprietor of the Three Tenses Home, Gift and Interior Design, Clarks Summit, from 1972 through 1992. He was a veteran of World War II, where he served as a cryptographer in the Army. He was a member of Our Lady of the Snows Church and was a former member of the Abington Rotary Club. He was a graduate of Georgetown University. Joseph loved his books, traveling, the theater and his dachshunds.

He was also preceded in death by a brother, the Rev. Jack Byrne, S.J.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of the Snows Church, 301 S. State St., Clarks Summit. Interment, St. Mary's Cemetery, Dunmore.

Friends may call Tuesday, 9 until time of Mass, at the Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home, 418 S. State St., Clarks Summit. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to VNA Hospice, 301 Delaware Ave., Olyphant, 18447.
