John A. Whitig, Jr. , 84, of South Abington Township, passed away on January 16, at the Linwood Nursing and Rehab Center in Scranton. His wife of 60 years is the former Bettie Wiggins.
Born in West Hazelton, he was the son of the late John and Anna Mollick Whitig, Sr. A graduate of Eddystone High School, John completed post graduate school at Pennsylvania Military Preparatory School in Chester, PA. He earned his B.S. in Education at State Teachers College West Chester, PA, a Masters in Arts and Elementary Principal Certification at Villanova University. Before retirement, he was a teacher and principal for Interboro School District in Delaware County, PA, dedicating nearly 40 years of his life to educating youth.
An all around athlete, John, played basketball and excelled at baseball playing semi-pro ball as a pitcher. He was known as "Fireball" on the mound. He also enjoyed reading, playing cards and golfing. He was an avid sports fan of the Philadelphia Eagles and Phillies, Penn State and most of all Notre Dame.
John was member of the Clarks Summit United Methodist Church and a 32nd degree Mason, belonging to Waverly Lodge #301 and Prospect Lodge #578, Free and Accepted Masons.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, who will be missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by two sons, John A. III and Barbara, Wallingford, PA; Brent and wife, Donna, Westtown, PA; a daughter Gail W. O'Donnell, South Abington Township, PA; a sister, Lucille Alexander, Eddystone, PA and three grandchildren Megan and Kelsey O'Donnell and Andrew Whitig.
The family would like to thank Dr. Kenneth Sebastianelli, the staff at The Willowbrook, Linwood Nursing and Rehab Center and Hospice of the Sacred Heart for the excellent care that John received.
A celebration of life memorial service will be held at the Clarks Summit United Methodist Church, 1310 Morgan Highway, Clarks Summit on Sunday April 10 at 3 PM with services by Rev. Douglas Sivers, pastor.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 pm.
