It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John William Walski, Scott Township, PA, at the age of 99 ½. He died peacefully at Allied Hospice Center on Saturday, April 24, 2021.
Born October 1, 1921 in Dickson City, PA, John was the son of the late John and Anna (Reckless) Walski. He was a graduate of Scott Township High School in 1939 and the Powell School of Business, Scranton, PA. He was employed by Williams Bakery where he met his beloved wife Mary, who preceded him in death in 2006. They were married for 62 years.
John honorably served his country in the United States Armed Air Forces during World War II where he rose to the rank of Sergeant in the Alaskan Air Command, Adak Island in the Aleutians. He was awarded the Pacific Theater Ribbon and was a member of the VFW Post 7069, Abington.
He was on the Board of Directors of the First National Bank of Carbondale which through merger became Pennstar and presently NBT Bank. John was a truck and poultry farmer with many interests. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, baseball, basketball, and stamp collecting. He also received many awards for his fancy tailed guppies. He and his wife Mary traveled to many places across America and Europe after he retired from his job at the Giant Market.
Surviving are two daughters, Mary (James) Nicolais and Patricia Sladicka, and a son, John (Debra) Walski. He was the greatly loved "Pa" to seven grandchildren: John (Victoria) Rolinc, Heather (Joseph) Graversen, Travis (Niherie) Sladicka, Tricia (Nick) Freeman, Jenna (Michael) Viola, Lauren (Kris) Lewis, and Jonathan (Jennifer) Walski. He was also blessed to have eleven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sons-in-law, Francis Sladicka and John J. Rolinc.
John was a lifetime member of Our Lady of the Snows Parish, Clarks Summit, PA. Due to COVID, a private family graveside service will be celebrated by Reverend Phillip Sladicka, pastor of Queen of the Apostles Parish, Avoca, PA.
Arrangements are entrusted to the Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home, and online condolences may be left on their website.
