John S. Stemphoski Jr., Newton Twp., died Monday at home. His wife is the former Catherine Auriemma. The couple celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary on June 25.

Born in Olyphant, son of the late John S. Sr. and Olga Stemphoski, he was a self-employed concrete contractor before his retirement in 1995. He was a life member of the Newton-Ransom Volunteer Fire Company since 1966, where he was instrumental in building the new firehouse, as well as the Northeast Pennsylvania Fire Training Grounds. He was a member of Church of St. Benedict, and also served on the Newton Twp. Planning Commission.

Also surviving are a son, John J. Stemphoski, Newton Twp.; a daughter, Margo Pritchyk, Newton Twp.; two grandchildren, Joey and Jake Pritchyk; a brother, Robert Stemphoski, Carbondale; and three sisters, Eleanor Twarde­ski, Elmira, N.Y.; Gloria Malewich, Jacksonville, N.C.; and Marlene Vladika, Lake Ariel.

He was also preceded in death by a son Stephen; and his son-in-law, Joseph Pritchyk.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. in the Church of St. Benedict, 1845 Newton-Ransom Blvd. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.

Friends may call Wednesday, 5 to 8 p.m., at the Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home, 418 S. State St., Clarks Summit.
