John Lucas Jr. of Dalton died Tuesday evening in the Abington Manor Nursing home. His wife is the former Jane LaCoe. The couple married Dec. 8, 1945, and would have celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary Monday.

Born in Pittston, son of the late John and Alice Stanton Lucas, he spent most of his adult life in Dalton and was a member of the Dalton United Methodist Church for more than 50 years. He served in the Army during World War II, going first to Greenland and then on to the South Pacific. He worked for many years farming at Edgewood Farms, Dalton, and then was employed by the Lackawanna Trail School District for more than 20 years. After retirement, he served as the crossing guard for children crossing Main Street in Dalton heading to the Dalton Elementary School.

John loved to garden and reminisce about his daughters and their families. He was an avid Penn State football and St. Louis Cardinals fan.

Also surviving are two daughters, Becky L. Rant and husband, Howard, Warrenton, Va.; and Nan E. Van Fleet and husband, Randall, Douglassville; a sister, Eleanor Schaefer and husband, Mark, Savannah, Ga.; three grandchildren, Amy Rant Miller and husband, Michael, Ashburn, Ariz.; Michael Ryan VanFleet and wife, Sherri, Tucson, Ariz.; and Sara Lynne VanFleet, Phoenix, Ariz.; and three great-grandchildren, Isabella Grace Miller, Olivia Jane Miller and Avery Olivia VanFleet.

The funeral will be Saturday at 10 a.m. from the Lawrence E. Young funeral Home, 418 S. State St., Clarks Summit, with services by the Rev. Brian Lucas, pastor of the Dalton United Methodist Church. Interment, Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst.

Friends may call Friday, 5 to 7 p.m., and Saturday, 9 until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Dalton United Methodist Church, 125 S. Turnpike Road, Dalton, 18414.
