John "Jack" G. Hiddlestone, 88, of Clarks Summit, died Thursday morning at his home. He was the husband of Nancy Sanders Hiddlestone. The couple celebrated their 61st anniversary in May.
Born in Throop, he was the son of the late John and Emma Crossman Hiddlestone Sr. He was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School, and went on to proudly serve his country in the Army. During his Army career, he served with the 520th Engineer Maintenance Company in Korea. Before his retirement, he was employed by Bell Telephone Co. for 36 years. He was a member of Parker Hill Community Church.
Jack had an extensive collection and knowledge of old picture postcards, particularly of Pennsylvania's Lackawanna County. He is the author of five published books, all illustrated with cards from his collection. Jack also enjoyed photography, volunteering at the Lackawanna Historical Society and attending many Abington Heights athletic games.
Known affectionately by his family as "Poppie," he will always be remembered for being sweet, witty, sincere, creative and kindhearted. He was a true gentleman.
Also surviving are a daughter, Suzanne Shea and husband, Joseph, Glenburn; and a granddaughter, Samantha Shea, Glenburn.
He was also preceded in death by three sisters, Norah Wetmore, Phyllis Herskovets and Joan McGuire.
A funeral service will be held Monday at 10 a.m. from the Parker Hill Community Church, 607 N. Abington Road, Clarks Summit. Interment will follow in Abington Hills Cemetery, South Abington Twp.
Friends may call Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home, 418 S. State St., Clarks Summit.
