Jess J. Hinkley Sr. passed away peacefully Monday surrounded by his family in his great game room at his home in New Milford. He was the husband of Barbara Tallman Hinkley. The couple have been married for 47 years.
Born in Newton, N.J., he was the son of the late Larry and Florence Osborne Hink-ley. He attended Scranton High School. Jess was an amazing businessman, owning several businesses that included Scranton Textile, Scranton Wiping Cloth, Scranton Export, another exporting business in Texas, two vintage clothing stores and Precision Alignment Auto Garage in the Scranton area. His extensive business ventures took him to every corner of the globe. He was also an antique car broker and owned over 27 antique automobiles, and was a member of the Villa Capri Cruisers. Not only traveling the world for business, he also hunted various game animals all over the world. He was a three time recipient of the Pennsylvania Grand Slam, consisting of black bear, whitetail buck and turkey.
Jess was an avid outdoorsman and shooter, placing numerous times in the National Trapshooting Association. He was a member of the Mill City, Factoryville and Moscow Sportsman's clubs, also Rock Mountain Sporting Clays, the NRA, Ducks Unlimited, National Beagle Association and the AKC Hunting Trials. Throughout the years, he trained award-winning hunting dogs. He served on the board of directors at the Glen Oak Country Club and was a member of Masonic Lodge F&AM 291 in Scranton.
He was a beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather and great-grandfather, affectionately known as "Papa."
Also surviving are three sons, Jess Hinkley Jr. and wife, Elaine, Scranton; and their children, Jess III and wife, Maura, Tyler and Amanda and her son, Noah; Clayton Hinkley and his wife, Kara of New Milford, and their daughter Kayla; and Judson Hinkley and his daughter, Theressa, Kingsley; two daughters, Debbie Dougher and her daughter, Ashlee, Scranton; and Christie Hinkley Hildebrand and husband, Mark, of Fort White, Fla., and their children, Alicia, Breeona, Cecilia, Odessa, Eden, Owen and Zach. Also survived by sister, Bernice Hinkley Griffiths Sink and husband, George, of Mount Cobb; and two sisters-in-law, Frances Hinkley, Clarks Summit; and Peggy Hinkley, Hop Bottom; and several nieces and nephews, grandnieces and nephews and great-grandnieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his son, Jason J. Hinkley; and two brothers, Raymond Hinkley and Francis "Butch" Hinkley.
A Masonic service will be held Friday at 6 p.m. from the Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc., 418 S. State St., Clarks Summit. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.
The family will receive friends Friday from 3 until time of service.
