Jane Y. Studer, 84, of Clarks Summit, died Sunday at the Mountain View Care Center after living with Alzheimer's disease for many years. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Fred R. Studer.
Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of Alfred E. and Bertha May Sheppard Yetter. She lived in the Clarks Summit area for most of her married life. She graduated from Scranton Central High School and received a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Master of Arts degree from Cornell University.
She went on to work in personnel and management at Daystrom Industries and then as director of management services at Eureka Printing. In the early 1970s, she founded and was appointed executive director of the Trehab Center, a multi-county social service agency, a post she held until her retirement in 1994. She was an active volunteer on many boards in the Scranton area, including Lackawanna County United Way, Woodbourne Sanctuary, Lacawac Sanctuary and the Delaware Valley Raptor Center.
She passionately loved all animals, especially her springer spaniels. She was a committed and articulate advocate for numerous environmental causes and in 1970, received the national Green Leaf Award from the Nature Conservancy. She and her husband, Fred, owned Randall Lake, a pristine glacial lake in northern Wayne County, which they enjoyed, cherished and protected for more than 50 years, and assured its preservation with a conservation easement.
Jane was known for her extraordinary intellect, energy, determination and the apparent ability to do anything she put her mind to, no matter what the obstacles. Among other unique accomplishments, she earned her pilot's license and spoke fluent Chinese. A favorite phrase of hers from childhood was very apt: "Look out everybody, Jane-O coming!"
Special and heartfelt thanks is extended to the wonderful staff at Mountain View Care Center, and also to Oakwood Terrace, for their care and kindness to Jane in her last years. There will be no public memorial service.
