HUBERT G. KELLEY

Hubert G. (Hubie) Kelley, 88, Clarks Summit, died Monday at Abington Manor, Clarks Summit. He was one of six children of the late Hubert D. and Anna Fritz Kelley of Scranton. Hubert and his wife, the former Estelle H. Irish, were married for 54 years prior to her death in 2000.

Born and raised in the Green Ridge section of Scranton, he graduated from St. Paul's High School, and attended the University of Scranton and the Pennsylvania State University. He was employed by Eureka Specialty Printing Co., Scranton, as Manager of Mechanical Engineering and Plant Engineer; Universal Instruments Corp., Binghamton, NY, as Senior Engineer, and Haddon Craftsmen Inc., Scranton, as Plant Engineer, where he retired. He did consulting engineering for New Era Manufacturing, Hawthorne, NJ; The Champlain Co., Bloomfield, NJ, and the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, Washington, DC, in the production of postage stamps.

He was a life member of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers through which he earned a professional engineering license. He also served as manager of SME's Chapter 101, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, for many years. He was a member of the YMCA Industrial Managements Club and the Society for the Advancement of Management, both of Scranton. He was active in sports as a manager of an Abington Little League ball team and as a trainer for an Abington Missy League ball team.

Additionally, he was president of the parents' committee for the Abington Heights High School track and cross country team. He and his late wife were board members of the Scranton Ballet Guild for many years.

Hubie was an avid hunter and fisherman, a member and society treasurer for the Abington Rod and Gun Club and a member of the Scranton Archery Club.

He served on a destroyer in the United States Navy during World War II and was awarded four medals: The American Campaign Medal with two Battle Stars, the European Campaign Medal with one Battle Star, the Purple Heart and the World War II Victory Medal. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7069, Clarks Summit, and American Legion Post 327, Olyphant.

He is the father of six children: Estelle Pennick and husband, Daniel, Mt. Pleasant, SC; Karen Kelley Mears and husband, Art, Justus; Kevin Kelley and wife, Bonnie, Howell, NJ; Hugh Kelley and wife, Eileen, Old Forge; Martha Manko, Dunmore, and Dr. Mary Kelley, Atlanta, GA. He has one surviving sister, Kitty Collins, 91. He has five grandchildren: DVM Kate Pennick, Chicago, IL; Brian Pennick and wife, Christine, Beaver Falls, NY; Devin Kelley and wife, Amanda, Dallas; Taylor Kelley, Hilo, HI; and Kellie Wellman and husband, Rob, Dunmore. He also has three great-grandchildren, Kelina Wellman, Danielle Pennick and Lily Kelley.

Five of his siblings are deceased. They include his brother, Bill Kelly, and three sisters, Delores Familetti, Anna Pryal and Jerry Romanowski.

A private funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family. The Rev. John Major, Trinity Episcopal Church, West Pittston, will officiate. A full military service will be conducted by members of his American Legion Post and members of the Naval Honor Guard, Philadelphia.
