Walter Herbert, 80, of Jermyn, died Friday morning at home. His wife, Shirley Demming Herbert, died in September.

Born in Jermyn, son of the late Walter and Katherine Chichura Herbert, he had been a resident of Scott Township for most of his life. For 35 years, he was a draftsman for the Weston Co., Archbald, retiring in 1992. He was a World War II veteran, serving with the Navy. He attended the Waverly Free Methodist Church of the Abingtons, and was a member of the local Masonic Lodge, Free and Accepted Masons.

He was a graduate of Scott High School and the Johnson School of Technology, with a degree in drafting.

He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother. Whether in good times or bad, he was a great source of strength, comfort and support to his family and was always willing to go out of his way to offer assistance to family and friends. He loved working outdoors on his farm, and had a great love for horses. No matter the situation, he never lost his sense of humor, and was always a true gentleman.

Surviving are two daughters, Carol Stine, York; and Kimberly Rosar, Scott Township; a sister, Katherine Dippel, Jermyn; and two granddaughters, Jenelle Troxell and Holly Kapinus.

The funeral will be Monday at 6 p.m. from the Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home, 418 S. State St., Clarks Summit, with services by the Rev. Carol Chisenhall, pastor of Waverly Free Methodist Church of the Abingtons. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family in Stone Cemetery, Scott Township.
