Herbert Andrew Grayek Sr., 88, of Scott Twp., died Wednesday at his home.
Born in Scranton, son of the late Bernard and Susanne Huczyk Grayek, he was a graduate of West Scranton High School, and was a staff sergeant in the Army, serving in World War II. He was the owner and operator of Grayek Construction Co., and built many custom homes.
Herb had a great love of flying, and enjoyed being in the air piloting his plane. He was a member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, and was proud to have his own private airstrip (Grayek International) and hangar facilities. "Captain Grayek" owned several different types of aircraft over his 60-plus years of flying.
Surviving are a son, Herb Grayek Jr. and his significant other, Sue O'Day, with whom he resided; two daughters, Renee Mears and husband, Frank, Clarks Summit; and Anna Muro and husband, James, Lake Winola; a sister, Loraine Nese, Glenburn; four granddaughters, Amy Grayek, Macungie; Molly Brobst, White Haven; Nicole Mears, Clarks Summit; and Marcy Scappatura, Lake Winola; a grandson, Mark Mears, Scranton; six great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild. Also surviving is his longtime companion, Ruth Sutton, Clarks Summit.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, Bernard Grayek.
A celebration of Herb's life will be held Saturday at 8 p.m. from the Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home, 418 S. State St., Clarks Summit. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 6 until time of service at the funeral home.
