Helen K. Hopkins, Falls, died Monday at the Mercy Hospital in Scranton. Her husband is Edward C. Hopkins. They would have celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary on January 7.
Born in Scranton, Helen was the daughter of the late Charles and Mary LaGrange Keihn. She lived in the Falls area most of her life, working side by side with her husband on their family farm and selling their produce at the Farmers Market in Scranton for over 65 years. She also managed the greenhouses at their home. Helen's green thumb was second to none. Flowers and plants blossomed under her loving care. She could pinch the stem of a dying rose and restore it to life. She had a great heart and a marvelous sense of humor. All who knew her were blessed by her warmth and her love.
Helen attended Bethel United Methodist Church and took an active part in the Women's Committee of the Wyoming Farm Bureau. She was a member of the Agriculture Committee of the Greater Scranton Chamber of Commerce, and a former member of Eastern Star, Junita Chapter, in Waverly. Helen served as a former director of the Farmers Market in Scranton, and as the past president of the Farmers Market Auxillary.
In addition to her flowers, Helen was renowned for her baked goods (made, of course, from scratch), especially her pies and Welch cookies. Every year, Coach Joe Paterno of Penn State placed an order for her blueberry pie.
Also surviving are five children: Beverly Talley, San Monica, California; Patricia Williams and her husband, Paul, Clarks Green; Harry Hopkins and his wife, Ruth, Falls; Cathy Mazaleski, and her husband Frances, Newton; and Helene Hopkins, and her husband, Michael Colaneri, Scranton. Helen further leaves behind a brother, Fred Keihn, and his wife, Libby, of Harrisonburg, Virigina; five grandchildren, Mark and William Hopkins, Laura Rosencrance, Kate Williams, and Leonard Mazaleski; and four great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, John Keihn, and son-in-law Carl Talley.
The family would like to give a special thank you to her care givers: Mary Lou, Lorraine, Judy and Lorah.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday at 11am from the Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home, 418 S. State St., Clarks Summit with services by Rev. Judith Schmitt. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family in Newton Cemetery.
Friends and family may call on Friday from 2-4pm and 6-8pm.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be sent to the Bethel United Methodist Church or Marworth's Gift of Hope Fund.
