Helen Elizabeth Hyde of South Abington Twp. died Saturday at home after an extended illness. Her husband of 66 years is Howard Hyde.

Born in 1924, in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, she was the daughter of the late John Henry and Emily Elizabeth Hurle Matthews. She was educated at St. Aidan's Girls School and trained as a nursing sister at Brisbane General Hospital, where she nursed many casualties of the Coral Sea Battle during World War II. Helen and Howard met in Brisbane during the war and were married in 1944. After being apart for two years, Helen came to the United States on a war bride ship and eventually settled in Waverly. She was a member of the Church of the Epiphany and served on its Altar Guild for more than 40 years. She had a talent for starting social clubs, such as the War Brides Cosmopolitan Club, which began after the war. She co-founded the Garden Exchange in Waverly and was one of the organizers of the Waverly Community Club. She served on the board of directors of the Waverly Community House, was a member of the Scranton Tennis Club and was an avid gardener. Helen's passion was tennis, and she taught hundreds of children and adults in the Abington area as well as winning numerous local tournaments. Helen was a recipient of the Paul Harris Fellowship Award given by the Rotary Club of the Abingtons for her exceptional leadership in the community, as well as the Globe Award as a atar achiever for outstanding service in Northeast Pennsylvania for 1989.

Also surviving are a son, David Hyde, Elverson; two daughters, Ellie Hyde, Dalton; and Deirdre Chrzanosk, and husband, Stanley, Waverly; three grandchildren, Jennifer, Christopher and Ashley; and six great-grandchildren.

The family would like to extend its heartfelt thanks to the VNA Hospice nurses and aides who so ably and compassionately cared for her over the past three years.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Church of the Epiphany, Glenburn, with interment to follow in the church's memorial garden.

The family will receive friends Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home, 418 S. State St., Clarks Summit.
