Gary Matthew "Fang" Meyers, age 59, died at the Allied Skilled Nursing Center in Scranton, Pennsylvania, on Friday, January 15, 2016. After a courageous (8) month battle with cancer, Gary is now at peace.
Born July 1, 1956, in Scranton, Pennsylvania, to Marjorie Lesh-Meyers Lindsay and the late William Meyers, he graduated from West Scranton High School in 1974 and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Film from the Pennsylvania State University, State College, PA. Gary's professional career covered every aspect of producing, writing, directing, and film editing for national broadcast television and motion pictures. Gary was the owner of the film company Daybreak Films and was proficient in all aspects of the film and television industry.
Gary previously worked as a Producer/Director/Editor for the then fledgling new television network FOX on one of their first cutting edge shows, "America's Most Wanted". Gary worked on the program for 23 years. Gary also worked on various projects as an editor for NBC Peacock Productions.
Gary's other career highlights include work with Yoko Ono on some of John Lennon's post-humorous music videos for "Milk and Honey" along with David Byrne & the Talking Heads.
Gary also worked as an editor for various episodes of "Saturday Night Live" and "The David Letterman Show". In addition, Gary worked for the Discovery Channel as a Director/Editor of various episodes of "The FBI Files" and "The New Detectives". While working for the Discovery Channel, Gary edited various documentary and reality shows ranging from "The Washington Monument: It Stands for All" detailing the history and 2 year restoration of the Washington Monument, "The Kennedy Women: Passion and the Politics", "On the Inside", and several other reality television shows. In 1997 Gary edited 2 motion pictures released for HBO, "The Girl Gets Moe" aka; "Love to Kill" and "Bram Stoker's: Legend Of The Mummy".
He lived in many different places- including, Georgetown, Washington, D.C., New York City, and California, before coming back to the Pennsylvania area to be closer to family. Back in Scranton, Gary became one of the biggest influences and driving forces behind the Scranton Police Department "Be Part of the Solution" campaign, something Gary looked at as a way of contributing to the City he grew up in. Gary created and produced the first six Public Service Announcements for Scranton Police which were broadcasted locally on TV, radio and the internet. The Public Service Announcements and the "Be Part of the Solution" campaign were designed to reduce crime, encourage victims to report crime, and to bring the community closer together working towards the goal of making Scranton a better place to be, just as Gary had envisioned.
Gary also loved his automobiles and had an intense passion and affection for The Beatles and the artist/painter, Maxfield Parrish. Gary was an avid collector of Parrish paintings and prints.
Gary will be remembered for his brilliance as an editor, an opinionated quick wit, his spirit of adventure, and a tenaciousness that allowed him to achieve true professionalism and great respect from his peers. Gary will truly be missed by everyone whose lives he touched, here, there, and everywhere.
Survivors include, his mother Marjorie Meyers Lindsay, three brothers William Meyers and his son Steven & Kathi Mercer and their children Kayla & Sarah; David Meyers and wife Sharon; and Paul "PJ" Lindsay and wife Megan; a sister Jene Madrienne Lindsay; Two nieces Marcy Duffy and husband Daniel and their children Connor & McKenzie; Melissa Pappas and husband James and Their children James & Claire; and many other cousins and friends.
The family would like to thank both Sacred Heart Hospice and Allied Skilled Nursing, especially the nurses and aides on 1 north, for their loving compassionate care.
A celebration of life will be held Saturday January 23 from 5 to 6pm at the Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home, 418 S. State St. Clarks Summit Pa. 18411
The family will receive friends from 3-5pm on Saturday at the funeral home.
