Listen to Obituary

A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Fred C. Lyon died at the age of 85 on December 2, 2020. Born to Esther and Laumer Lewis Lyon on August 15, 1935 in Staten Island, NY, Fred spent his early childhood in Brooklyn, where he had cherished memories of Sunday dinners that his family continued to attend after moving to Plainfield, NJ. After moving with his wife and children from Sparta, NJ in 1966, Fred lived the rest of his life in Northeastern Pennsylvania, both in Clarks Summit and Clifford Township.

A proud and loyal alumnus of Rutgers University, Fred joined the Mutual of New York Insurance Company in 1962. During the course of more than five decades he was a consistent Top Club Qualifier, a life member of the Million Dollar Round Table, and responsible for ushering his agency into the computer age.

Fred was active in industry and community affairs. He previously served as President of the Scranton Association of Life Underwriters and was both a charter member and Vice President of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Estate Planning Council. As a stalwart servant of God, Fred was a Deacon and Elder at First Presbyterian Church of Clarks Summit, past Moderator of Lackawanna Presbytery, and past President of the greater Scranton area's Council of Churches.

In Fred's sixty-five years of marriage, the longest he was ever apart from his wife was just two weeks. He was an avid outdoorsman who valued a good dog and a sturdy boat, an honest and honored businessman who cared empathetically for his clients, and a generous but humble ally to those in need of a helping hand. A lover of the arts and history, he took great pleasure in reciting facts, telling stories, and doling out lessons (perhaps most important, there's always room for ice cream) to anyone who would listen, but especially his grandchildren. He will always be remembered for his unique style of determination and the admirable values for which he stood.

Fred is loved deeply and survived by his wife, Charlotte Lyon; children, Fred C. Lyon II, his wife Jan Edmiston, Char-Anne Lyon, and Cris Beth Lyon; along with grandchildren, Ben Lyon and his wife Sahar Kazmi, Jasmine Silvestri, Jay Lyon, Joe Wiley and his wife Marina Irfan, Taylor Silvestri, Libby Lyon and her husband Brian Cully, as well as his trusty dog Lucy.

A memorial will be held when all can join safely to celebrate Fred's life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the First Presbyterian Church of Clarks Summit, at 300 School Street Clarks Summit, PA18411, or www.fpccs.org .
