Fred C. Dempsey, 91, of Clarks Summit, died Wednesday at the Gino Merli Veterans Center, Scranton, following a recent illness. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Doris Beers Dempsey.
Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late William Alexander Dempsey and Anna Bell Cook. His family moved to the Abingtons in 1918, and he was educated in Clarks Summit schools.
Fred was a devoted and active member of the Clarks Summit United Methodist Church for many years. He served in the Navy during World War II on the LST 607 ship in the Pacific for three years.
After returning to Clarks Summit, he established the OK Tire Store and was in business for 30 years. He was a past member of the Abington Rotary Club and a golfing member of the Scranton Canoe Club at Lake Winola.
Also surviving are two daughters, Donna M. Rutherford and husband, Gary, Bristol, Vt.; and Barbara L. Mark and husband, Craig, Dallas; a son, Fred M. Dempsey and wife, Debbie, South Abington Twp.; six grandchildren, Nicholas and Devlin Rutherford, Corey and Todd Mark and Tyler and Lauren Dempsey; and a brother, William, New Zealand.
He was also preceded in death by a sister, June; and a brother, Charles.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Clarks Summit United Methodist Church, 1310 Morgan Highway, Clarks Summit, to be officiated by the Rev. Sarah Miller. Interment will be at a later date in Abington Hills Cemetery.
Friends may call Saturday, from 1 until the time of the service at the church.
