Evelyn S. Franklin, formerly of Clarks Summit and Satellite Beach, Fla., died peacefully Sunday morning at Mount Nittany Medical Center in State College. Her husband of 53 years, John L. Franklin, died in 1996.
Born Oct. 19, 1916, in Scranton, daughter of the late William H. Shirer and M. May Shirer, she was employed as a registered nurse before retirement.
Lynn, as she was known to her friends and family, was a lifelong bridge player. She loved to entertain, travel and spoil her family. She often quoted lines of poems she had memorized, and noticed everything and everyone around her. She was particularly aware of magnificent trees, and collected birds all her life. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Surviving are a daughter, Marti Franklin Duffy, State College; two grandchildren, J.R. Duffy and Carol F. Duffy, both of California; many nieces and nephews; and her extended family, Julie, Peter and Zachary Kohn; Grace and Barry Miller; Jon and Nancy Eastwood; and friends old and new throughout the country.
She was also preceded in death by two brothers, William "Herb" Shirer and Joseph Langan; and a daughter, Carol Jean.
The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. from the Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home, 418 S. State St., Clarks Summit, with services by M. Jon Eastwood.
