Eugene G. Stec, M.D., 88, Dalton, died peacefully Saturday, Aug. 19, 2017, at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital surrounded by family. His wife is the former Helen Krenitsky.
Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Michael J. Stec, M.D., and Julia Stec. He graduated from
Penn State University
and completed his medical education at Jefferson Medical College, where his father and two of his children also attained medical degrees. Before starting his medical practice, he was in active service with the Air Force and continued to serve with the Air Force Reserve until 1963.
Eugene started his medical practice by joining his father's medical practice and later founded a family practice group based at Mercy Hospital in Scranton. He also played an active role in various professional societies, including the board of the Pennsylvania Academy of Family Practitioners, Professional Advisory Council of the Pennsylvania Blue Shield and the board of trustees of Mercy Hospital, Scranton. He retired from full-time medical practice after 40 years in 1995. Eugene was an avid gardener, a bridge enthusiast and loved ballroom dancing. He enjoyed traveling, domestic and abroad, often accompanied by his children and grandchildren. He was loved by his colleagues, family, especially his 25 grandchildren.
Also surviving are his sister, Romaine Somerville; and his seven children and their spouses, Michael Andrew Stec, Genean Stec and Patrick Lee, Thomas John and Suzanne Stec, Nadia and Dr. Mark Mauer, Larissa and Kurt Gockley, Dr. Eugene Eric and Theresa Stec, and Dr. Heather Stec and Mathew DeGurse; 25 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2017, 10 a.m., at Our Lady of the Abingtons Church, 700 W. Main St., Dalton, to be celebrated by the Rev. Arbogaste Santoun.
