Elmer F. Swartz, Newton Township, died Sunday morning at the Moses Taylor Hospital. His widow is the former Ida M. Stephenson. The couple celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary last August.
Born in Mill City, son of the late William G. and Anna Mae Billings Swartz, he was a resident of Newton Township for the past 52 years. Before retirement, he was the road master for Newton Township for 18 years, a bus driver with Buranich Enterprises for Abington Heights School District for 28 years and also ran the family farm. He was a life member of the VFW Post 7069, a member of the American Legion in Black Walnut, the Newton-Ransom Volunteer Fire Company and a former supervisor of Newton Township.
He was a Navy veteran in Korea from 1952 to 1956 serving on the USS Eugene A. Greene DDR 711. A 1949 graduate of Falls-Overfield High School, he was of the Protestant faith and was one of the first EMTs on the Newton-Ransom Ambulance.
Also surviving are two sons, Bradly D., Meshoppen; and Kevin, Newton Township; a daughter, Christine Swartz, Newton Township; three grandchildren, Rebecca, Stephanie and Timothy; three sisters, Alice Kircher, Collierville, Tenn.; Martha Lott, Auburn Township; and Lynda Swartz, Hampton Falls, N.H.; a brother, Raymond G., Murrells Inlet, S.C.
A funeral service will be Thursday at 10 a.m. from the Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home, 418 S. State St., Clarks Summit, by his nephew, Leon Kircher, chaplain for the Army. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Glendale.
