Edward H. Sopinski, Sr., 83, of Clarks Green, died Saturday at the Gino J. Merli Veterans' Center in Scranton. His wife is the former Elsie Miller, the couple had been married for 38 years.
Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Boleslaw and Constance Lewonczyk Sopinski. He was a graduate of St. John's High School in Scranton, and received an Accounting degree at the Lackawanna Business School. He proudly served in the U. S. Army stationed in Korea. Prior to his retirement, he worked for Judge Lumber for over forty years, working his way from truck driver to the company's bookkeeper.
He was a lifetime member of Abington Memorial VFW Post #7069, a life member of the American Legion, Post #0665, and a life member of the Military Order of the Cooties, Pup Tent 64.
Also surviving are two sons, Paul Sopinski Sr. and wife Mary-Lu, Taylor, Edward H. Sopinski Jr., and wife Karen; Clarks Summit; a stepdaughter, Rosemary A. Snyder and husband Robert, Bensalem; six grandchildren, Paul Sopinski Jr., Jason, Sopinski, Nicole Miller, Matthew Sopinski, Sarah Sopinski, and Bradley Sopinski; two step grand children, Gail S. Shochet and Robin S. Wilson; nine great grand children; a brother Chester Sopinski, and two sisters, Sister Fidelia (Florence) Sopinski, and Mary Milewski, several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death was a sister Stella Znosky, and two brothers, Joe Gawelko and John Gawelko.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday at 10 am from the Church of St. Gregory, 330 N. Abington Rd., Clarks Green, to be celebrated by Rev. John M. Lapera, Pastor Interment will follow in Miller Cemetery, Scott Twp. All those attending are asked to go directly to the church.
Friends may call Tuesday from 5 to 8 pm at the Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home, 418 S. State St., Clarks Summit. Veterans Of Foreign Wars Service will be held at 7pm by VFW Post # 7069 of Clarks Summit In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Griffin Pond Animal Shelter, 967 Griffin Pond Rd., So. Abington Twp., PA 18411.
