Edward F. McFarland, a lifelong resident of Clarks Summit, died Sunday afternoon at home. His wife is the former Beth MacTaggart, whom he married in 1960.
Born in Peckville, he was the son of the late Percy and Beatrice McCormick McFarland. Before retirement, he was a self-employed home builder and was a past president of the Lackawanna Home Builders Association, where he served as a lifetime board member. He was a member of Clarks Green United Methodist Church, where he served for many years on the administrative boards. He also served on the boards of the Wyoming Conference of the United Methodist Church at Sky Lake and Wesley Village. He was an active member of the Abington Rotary Club, where he was a past president and a recipient of the prestigious Paul Harris Fellow Award. Edward was known as an avid collector of rocks and minerals. He belonged to Eastern Federation of Mineralogical and Lapidary Society, the American Federation of Mineralogical Society and was a founder of the Mineralogical Society of Northeastern Pennsylvania, where he also served as president. He had exhibited numerous rocks and minerals at the Carnegie Museum in Pittsburgh. He especially enjoyed his time with his good friends in the Rusty Zippers Club. He also served on the board at the Everhart Museum and the Waynewood Assoication, where he served as property chairman and president.
Also surviving are a daughter, Alexis McFarland Kelly and husband, Timothy, with whom he resided; a brother, Donald "Joe" McFarland, Prescott, Ariz.; a grandchild, Rhys D. Kelly; two nieces and two nephews.
He was also preceded in death by his beloved grandson, Timothy Edward Kelly; his sister, Elsie Valvano; and a nephew, Lynn? McFarland.
The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. from Clarks Green United Methodist Church, 119 Glenburn Road, with services by the Rev. Brent Stouffer, pastor. Interment will follow at Clarks Green Cemetery.
Friends may call Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home, 418 S. State St., Clarks Summit.
