Edmund J. Carr, 78, of Newton Township passed away on December 27, 2021, surrounded by family at Geisinger Medical Center in Scranton, PA after a brief illness.
Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Edmund P. Carr and Clara E. Carr, who both lived in Clarks Summit. He was also preceded in death by his sisters: Janet Howells and Diane Keenan, and his brother, James Carr.
Surviving him are his wife, Darlene; his loving sons, Edmund R. Carr and wife Terisa, and Kevin Carr; and his adoring daughter, Tami Carr. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren: Corey A. Carr, Emily M. Gallagher, Kaitlyn, Samantha, Jacob and Bella Carr. Also 2 great-grandchildren: Noah and Adam Carr, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Ed is a 1961 graduate of Newton Ransom High School. Ed and Darlene were married on August 11, 1962 and would have celebrated their 60 th wedding anniversary on August 11, 2022.
After high school, Ed worked odd jobs at a gas station and bowling alley, but he always dreamed of being his own boss. In the mid 1960's, Ed started a garbage route and had many side jobs. He had a tree removal company, sold firewood, a snow plowing business, and ultimately bought his first John Deere riding mower – which he could not afford, so he started another company, "Industrial Lawn Maintenance", to pay for it.
After Industrial Lawn Maintenance got off the ground, he dipped his toe into yet another company in 1969 called Scranton Label, Inc.
The birth of Scranton Label, Inc. began in the basement of his home (that he built) with just one machine. Scranton Label, Inc. was well known for the "FREE THE HOSTAGES" bumper stickers in the early 80's during the Iran hostage crisis. Ed produced over 40 million bumper stickers at no charge and they were distributed worldwide. The company is now celebrating its 54 th year.
Ed was actively involved in numerous community and charitable organizations. He was a member of the Countryside Community Church, where he served on the Endowment and Investment Committee and as Chair of the Parsonage Committee. Ed and Darlene made a charitable contribution to help build the chapel room.
For a short period of time, Ed served on the Board as President of the American Heart Association, where he was given the "Distinctive Honoree Award" in March of 2012 for his "support, generosity, and dedication."
Ed had also donated not only monetarily, but also of his time, to help and beautify his community in which he was very proud.
Ed had many activities and hobbies aside from what he considered "work". He invested in properties in his hometown, renovated them, and rented them out.
He also enjoyed many hobbies and activities such as his extensive antique car collection, motorcycles, cutting EVERYONE's lawn, killing dandelions in the community, going to dinner twice a week with his friends, and breakfast with the guys on Saturdays for the past 40+ years.
In Ed's younger years he said all he ever wanted to do was "make enough money to buy his friends dinner" – and that he did!
Ed was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, boss and friend. His life impacted so many lives. His death will do the same. We know the community is grieving with us.
