Dorothy McCormack, 93, Clarks Summit, died Wednesday evening at her daughter's home. She was the widow of Robert J. McCormack, Sr., who died in 2012. The couple were married for 58 years.
Born in South Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Patrick Albert. She was a graduate of St. Mary's of Assumption High School and Keystone Junior College. Earlier she worked for the Secretary of the Navy in Washington DC, then returned to Scranton to raise her family. When her children were older, she worked at the credit unions for the Scranton Times and CMC. She was a lifelong member of St. Mary's of the Assumption Church, South Scranton, until its closure, then joined Our Lady of the Snows, Clarks Summit.
Mother of seven children, she was very active in all their activities, often found in the backyard playing baseball, kickball, badminton, and serving as the referee of ice hockey games. Also finding time to volunteer at the school library and cafeteria. She sat through hundreds of baseball and basketball games, school plays, chorus concerts, dance recitals, science fairs, and graduations.
Although she never had her driver's license, she was the best "backseat driver". She loved to crochet, knit, quilt, and enjoyed spending time with her friends at the Book and Card clubs and bingo games. She enjoyed her time spent traveling with her husband for credit union activities, having made many new friends.
She is survived by her children, Mary Alice Kropp and husband Mike, Shirley, Ma, Karen Welcome and husband Claude, and Ellen McGuigan and husband Vince, all of Clarks Summit, and Robert Jr. and wife Jeanette, Dunmore, Susan, Philadelphia, Cathleen, Patrick and wife Sara, all of Scranton; grandchildren Jill Kropp and John DeMartin, Stephanie Kropp, Krysta Bosello and husband Kleber, Kerri Gaughan and husband Pat, Amy Devine and husband Ryan, Chris Allen and wife Mary Ellen, Jordan, Jaime, and Patrick McCormack; nine great grandchildren; a brother, Jack Albert, Pittston. Two brothers-in-law, Ed Fields and Leo McCormack; uncle Gene Patrick; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Fields, sisters-in-law Dorothy Albert, Jeanne and Helen McCormack, brothers-in-law Donald Munley and Thomas McCormack; and three nephews.
The family would like to thank Dr. Richard Weinberger, Nancy Greer NP, and staff for their care and concern shown to Dorothy and her family throughout the years. Heartfelt thanks to Allied Hospice, especially Jonathan, Penny, and Kristen for keeping Dorothy comfortable and assisting the family to cope during this difficult time.
A blessing service will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at the Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc., 418 S. State Street, Clarks Summit, with services by Rev. Stephen Asomah, assistant pastor. Interment will be private at Cathedral Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m.
