Dorothea C. Metz, 92, of Dalton, died peacefully Sunday at Abington Manor, where she was a resident for the past two years. She was married for 40 years to the late Charles A. (Jerry) Metz, who died in 2013.
Daughter of the late Edward and Teresa Cadden Clarke, she was a graduate of Dalton High School and completed many American Institute of Banking educational programs. Her banking career began as a teller at Central State Bank, Dalton, in 1945 and she held many positions through the years as the bank grew and expanded to become NBT Bank, from which she retired as senior vice president at the age of 75 in 2000.
Dot was active in many church and community affairs, having served as a Dalton borough councilwoman, and she was named Woman of the Year in 1973 by both Dalton borough and the Dalton Women's Club. She was also recognized as a Scranton Times Northeast Woman for being a 50-year volunteer at Mercy Hospital in Scranton. She and Jerry planted and tended the flowers in the grotto at Our Lady of the Abingtons for many years.
Surviving are sisters, Lois Fuller, Taylor; and Janet White, York; a sister-in-law, Patti Clarke, Clarks Summit; nieces and nephews, Ned Clarke; Bonnie Clarke and her daughter, Leah; Tim, Tom and Terri White, Barbara Cutler, Amanda Adams; Bob Clarke and wife, Christy, and their children, Justin, Devon, Ashleigh and Brayden; Michelle Bielovitz and husband, Kirk, and their daughter, Julia; Jacqui Benedict, Jim Fuller Jr. and wife, Maureen, and their sons, Jim and wife, Amanda, Ryan and Christopher; Susan Graham and husband, Tim, and their daughters, Sarah, Emily and Katie; Mark Fuller; Ellen Raino and husband, Gregg, and their son, Liam; Karen Fuller; Donald Fuller and wife, Terry, and their son, Flynn.
She was also preceded in death by siblings, Marion, James, Edward Clarke, Joan Cutler and William Clarke; and nieces and nephews, Kevin and Jim Clarke, Marybeth Adams, EJ Cutler and Kathleen Fuller.
Although she and Jerry had no children of their own, they cared for their numerous nieces, nephews and neighbors as if they were. Together, they attended countless birthday parties, graduations and other significant life events, and in treating everyone as family, they became everyone's Aunt Dot and Uncle Jerry. These memories will be forever cherished by this extended family.
